Rob’s 'Medical Madness' Walking Tour

Let us traverse the London streets of Marylebone, Fitzrovia and Bloomsbury in search of those places and people who have made our capital city a nest of disease and contamination, but also a metropolis of healing and good health.

Our start point is St. Andrew’s Place near the medicinal garden of the Royal College of Physicians (Nearest tube stations are Great Portland Street and Regent’s Park).

Massive stone columns of the exterior with clock tower.
  • The hangouts of healers and hoaxers around one of our best known medical streets, those characters who made medical history in London for the greater worldwide good, or dangerously for deception and even death with their ‘quackery’ and queasy cures.
  • A ‘tongue in cheek’ look at the royals and high ranking government ministers, and whether they were fit to rule us, either physically, mentally or morally - and whether they were well enough to take charge of our nation at all!
Young student group with book shelves.

  • The real reason for those expressions ‘dutch courage’, ‘one for the road’ and ‘on the wagon’, and medicine's long and complex relationship between getting a patient back on their feet and boozing!
Speech therapist to King George VI.
  • Medicine and sexuality, and undress the often unsavoury tales of the relationship between the medical profession and sex and sexology, as we take a walk on the wide side to uncover the innovation from practitioners who would liberate people from centuries of intolerance.
  • Medicine at the Movies! It’s lights, scalpel, action as we check out our obsession with the silver screen and tragic, comic, romance, scandal and intrigue in fiction.

Our end point is the Welcome Collection at 183 Euston Road NW1 2BE, where I shall introduce you to the museum highlights and any exhibitions. This space has an excellent cafe, as well as restrooms.

Our customers say...
"My wife Angela and I had a very enjoyable and informative London Rock Tour last Wednesday, 11th September. with Rob as our Tour Guide. I used to work in Piccadilly during the 60s, so many of the locations Rob introduced us to were familiar (though sadly nothing like as brilliant as they were back then!). Carnaby Street is now pretty soulless (I spent many lunch hours walking about its environs, so I know what a colourful and "buzzing" place it was), as was Denmark Street (now a shadow of its "Tin Pan Alley" days). However, the Tour brought back many happy memories. However, the main reason we enjoyed ourselves so much was Rob's excellence as a Tour Guide. He was enthusiastic, informative and very personable. And his audio-visual aids were excellent. I would absolutely have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone who has an interest in those wonderful 1960s musical times. The whole experience was brilliant! "

"A group of us did Rob's James Bond walking tour recently. At a relaxed pace he packed in a load of info about 007 and the London locations of the JB movies. Rob was very personable and knowledgeable on his subject. He involved us by asking questions about Bond, who our favourite Bond actor was etc. But he was also able to answer just about all of our questions that we asked him. I was a cold winter's day, so I was happy that he ended the tour in a warm pub!"
